1. Full Backup

A full backup is a method to backup where all the files and folders are selected to backup. It is usually used by initial or first backup, after which incremental and differential backups are done. Similarly, after doing incremental and differential backups several times, it is very common that we start with fresh full backup again.

Some people prefer full backups for their smaller folders and projects, which do not occupy much storage space.

Here you back up your daily tasks, from Monday to Friday every night. And this cycle continues every day. At the end of all the backups, we will get all our files and folders backed up. In such a situation, we will not have any risk of data loss.


  • Restore them is very easy and fast because in this the entire list of files and folders is stored in the same backup set.

2. Incremental Backup

Incremental backup is a backup in which all the changes that occur are after the last backup. Last backup here can be a full backup or simply last incremental backup. Here, a full backup is done in incremental backups, and then there is a second backup which is nothing but the same changed files and new files which are added after the last backup.

You can set these protocols for Incremental backup, where its work will last every night from Monday to Friday. To assume that you have previously backed up to Monday Here first backup will be a full backup because you have not backed up any earlier. In the same incremental backup on Tuesday, only those files will be backed up, which have been changed since Monday and some new files have been added to it. Just the same kind of changes that have been made in your day will be just forwarded to them.

  • Here the restores are very slow compared to full backup and differential backups.

3.Differential Backup

Differential backups always come in full backups and incremental backup. Differential backup The backup is called when all changes have been made after last full backup. In differential backups, a full backup is done first and then the second backup run, the same changes are made after the last full backup. The result here is a very fast backup if we compare it with a full backup. The storage space used is very small compared to incremental backups. Restores are slow in a full backup, faster than incremental backups.

If we set up a differential backup, they will backup all night from Monday to Friday, as we know that the first backup will be done on Monday, which will be a full backup. Then, in the next days, the backup will only contain those backups which are different from the earlier backups. In the same way, only the changes made files will be copied.


  • These are very fast backups compared to full backups
  • In these, storage space is used efficiently because only the changed data is backed up in it.
  • This makes very fast restores compared to incremental backups


  • Backups on here are very slow compared to incremental backups
  • More efficiently storage space is not used here than an Incremental backup. All files that are added and edited are re-duplicated after the initial full backup, with all subsequent differential backups.
  • Restores here are very slow compared to full backups.
  • With it, Restores are a bit more complicated than full backups but are simpler compared to incremental backups.

4. Mirror Backup

Mirror backups, as its name suggests, is called such a backup where the backup of the source is stored in one place such as a mirror in the image of a mirror. But here in mirror backups, whenever a file is deleted in the source, it also gets deleted in its mirror backup itself. Therefore, it is very cautious to use mirror backup. Because if a file is unintentionally deleted by any virus, it can also affect its mirror backup. So many people do not consider it a backup.

Many backup software utilities do not provide support for mirror backups.


  • These backups are very clean and do not contain any old and obsolete files.


  • If it is accidentally deleted from a file source, it may also be deleted from the mirror backup.

5. Full PC Backup or Full Computer Backup

Full PC backup is called backup in which all images of computer hard drives are uploaded and not only individual files and folders. A drive image is like a snapshot of a drive. It can be stored compressed or uncompressed anywhere.

If we talk about any other file backups, then only the user’s document, pictures, videos and music files can be restored, but they have to reinstall the operating system, programs, etc. for a second time either by source download or by disk media.

But with the help of full PC backup, you can completely restore the hard drives to their exact state if they are backed up. So here we can recover documents, pictures, videos and audio files as well as operating systems, hardware drivers, system files, registry, programs, emails. In other words, a crashed computer can be brought to its exact state with the help of a full PC backup. Full PC backups are also sometimes called “Drive Image Backups”.

  • Optical drives such as CDs, DVDs, and Blu Ray discs

  • Backup with another shared folder that is active in another computer in the network

7. Offsite Backup

This is a backup where the backup storage medium is kept in another geographic location. This backup can be done locally before any of the usual storage devices but if the same storage medium is moved to another location then it becomes an offsite backup.

8. Online Backup

An online backup is a backup that is done in a storage medium that is always connected to the source. Here the word “online” implies that a storage device or facility that is always connected. This type of storage medium and facility are always located in offsite and with this, it is connected with the backup source via the Internet Connection. There is no hand of human people here, for any work related to Storage media. 
Nowadays, quite a lot of commercial data centres are now managing such subscription services to their customers. Mainly all storage data centres are far away from their secure but they remain connected through the internet.

Here a client application is installed on the source computer which will be backed up. Users have to first define which folders and files they want to backup and then the process of backup starts. Here the data is compressed and encrypted, to send it to the storage data centre through the Internet. 
The storage facility here is a commercial data centre which is very far away from the Source Computer. Typically they are designed to avoid any kind of calamities like fire and earthquake.


  • It provides the best protection against fires, theft and natural disasters.
  • Because the data is replicated in many storage media, the risk of data loss is very low.
  • Because backups are very frequent here, data loss is rarely compared to other backups.
  • Since it works online because it has very little human or manual interaction, after its setup.


  • This is a very expensive option compared to local backups.
  • Early and earlier backups are very slow, which can take up to several days, depending on your internet connection and how much amount of data you need to backup.
  • It does a very slow restore.

9. Remote Backup

A remote backup is a form of offsite backup, which is a bit different, as we can access, restore and administer backups without having to stay in its physical location. Here the term “remote” implies that with the help of which we can control and administer backups from any location. Here you do not need to be physically present in those locations.

  • Subscription backup services which provide commercial data centres.
  • Backup an offsite FTP server


  • It manages very good protection from natural disasters compared to local backups.

  • It will take more time to backup and restore than Local Backup.

10.Cloud Backup

Cloud backup is a term that we can use in place of Online Backup and Remote Backup. In this type of backup, the data is backed up to a storage server or facility which is connected through the internet. Along with proper login credentials, these backups can be safely accessed from any computer, which requires good internet connection later. The word “cloud” here means that such a backup storage facility that can be accessed through the Internet.

11. FTP Backup

Backups in this type of backup are done through FTP Server in a File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Generally, you can see the FTP server in a commercial data centre, which is very far away from the source data. When the FTP server is located in another location, it is called a secondary form of offsite backup.


  • Because this is an offsite backup, it provides good protection against fire, floods, earthquakes and other natural disasters.

  • It will take more time to backup and restore than Local Backup.
